The Ballroom
|
Designing The Ballroom posed unique challenges. Because it is not a dedicated theater, the motorized projector and screen
had to be easily controllable and unobtrusive when the theater is not in use. The hand-painted walls and ceiling had to be
taken into account when designing where the retractable projector and screen could go, and constrained their size.
Further, the amount of ambient light in the room made it difficult to create a sufficiently
bright picture on the screen. Finally, the sheer size of the room (2,500 square feet) was a challenge to dominate
acoustically but not aesthetically.
A Vidikron LCD Projector, with a brightness of
2000 ANSI lumens and a very small size, was the natural choice to solve the brightness and size issues. It is lowered
via motorized lift through a small, nearly invisible cutout in the ceiling. Sound in the room is provided by
a pair of B&W Nautilus 802 speakers, a pair of
Velodyne subwoofers, and several pairs of in-wall loudspeakers painted to aesthetically disappear into the walls.
The ensemble is controlled from a single hand-held
Crestron touchscreen remote control.

To the left of the room's entrance, hidden in the first photo, is the custom-designed full bar which also
houses the electronics that power the cavernous room.
Two McIntosh MC352 350-watt power amplifiers
and a McIntosh MX132 Audio Video Preamplifier
provide the muscle
to power all the loudspeakers, while a high-performance California Audio Labs 5-disc CD changer
supplies music at the highest level of audio excellence.
